What can Spurrier do? |
With 1:51 seconds to go, South Carolina
was ahead of Tennessee by two TDs.
The Gamecocks' defense for the third
time this year totally collapsed, as if there was no D on the field,
and lost the game 45-42 in OT.
Head Coach Steve Spurrier - who personally apologized to the fans after the game - has to be a
big man to not fire Defensive Coordinator Lorenzo Ward, and his staff
tonight. If Spurrier were acting on merit only, he would
terminate the defensive staff Saturday night.
Any man, in any job would be
immediately fired if he did his job with the level of incompetence of
Ward, and his staff.
It will take compassion for your fellow
man, and a lot of restraint, to let Lorenzo Ward, and staff, stay to finish out the year.
With the defensive coaches, South
Carolina has very little chance of beating Florida or Clemson. The
home game with UAB is not a given.
That said: if Ward, and his whole
defensive staff, are not let go at the absolute soonest point
possible, Gameocck fans will abandon the team - or hopes in it - in droves.
There have been very few times when the
Gamecocks have been as humiliated over their team as they have been
this year. And it's because of the defense.
Just when you think the D can be no
more outrageously bad, it gets worse.
When SC's offense made some big plays
to give the team a two-TD cushion so late in the game, the defense
could not have played any worse, if it had been trying to concede
the game.
Lorenzo should be very grateful
Spurrier does not want to embarrass him, as he has embarrassed
Spurrier, and the whole Gamecock nation. If Spurrier were reactionary
Ward would be gone, already. And a lot of fans would not be hurt by it.
