For Steve Spurrier: “The plan is to
definitely be back here and so forth,” Spurrier said according to
Spurrier will be back next year, full of enthusiasm. Proving critics wrong is what he lives for. |
But Spurrier refused to address the
future of his assistant coaches, including Defensive Coordinator
Lorenzo Ward, D-line Coach Deke Adams, LB Coach Kurt Botkin and
Secondary Coach Grady Brown.
Spurrier said of the question about the
future: “If it’s got anything to do with coaches coming back next
year, me coming back next year, I am just going to refrain from all
of that. Let’s get through this season here and see where we are
all at is probably the smartest thing for all of us to do right now.”
Spurrier is no doubt at the lowest
point he can be at this year. Maybe his team -including the offense
-folds at this point. Because no matter what the offense does, the
defense will lose the game.
It's as if the defense has put money on
its opponent, and is trying to lose games on purpose. It cannot get
any more inept or incompetent, if it tried. And the defensive
coaching staff has totally failed in making any move to correct the
futility. That is the trait of a lost coaching staff, when no
improvement is made.
Once the pain and ugliness has been
digested, Spurrier has come too far to quit now. No matter who he
chooses to replace Ward and Co., those coaches will be (have to) be
better.
There is the foundation that Spurrier
has built at SC. Bad coaching hires have shaken that foundation, but
not to the point Spurrier will not get invigorated for one more try.
Once he has purged his program of its ailments, things will look much
better.
Let's bet Spurrier embraces the
challenge of proving he can move his guys back to where they were
before the program was damaged by a lack of coaching talent on the
defensive side of the ball.
Spurrier will be back and he will be
good again.
