Accepting the deficiencies of the defense, can Spurrier adjust to finish strong? |
Tennessee at South Carolina used to be
a BIG game. Even when the likes of Peyton Manning wore the Orange and
White, and the Gamecocks did not have much of a chance, it was fun
football.
Since the glory days of the Vols,
things have changed,, and changed again.
Lately South Carolina has been able to
defeat Tennessee in Columbia. But with a total breakdown of the
Gamecock defense in 2014, the chances for South Carolina to win more than
five games in 2014 did not look good.
But based on a gameplan last Saturday night
at Auburn, the Gamecocks could be a threat to win.
An adequate defense may be an
aggressive, always-scoring, offense.
If Steve Spurrier can maximize his
scoring chances- score a TD every time the Gamecocks have the ball –
The Gamecocks may be able to finish up well.
There is no better time than today,
versus Tennessee, to test the new 'never-give-up-the ball' offense.
The Gamecocks played Auburn like the
team had the idea the defense would provide no help. And that was an
accurate assumption. If you expect no help, you won't be disappointed
when you get none. And that is how the Gamecocks must adapt its style
of play.
Even with four losses in 2014, there is
much to play for. If Coach Steve Spurrier can win against Tennessee,
it will at least give South Carolina fans hope for a strong finish.
The Vols game is a chance to renew a
little faith in the Head Ball Coach’s ability to take what he has
and do the best with it.
And that's what Gamecocks fans should
hope for. If South Carolina can figure out a way to beat Tennessee,
there is a chance for more wins later. And each win, considering the
disaster so far, is precious. That's something Gamecock fans have not
had to consider since the last time Tennessee was a powerhouse.
