Was not long ago, Spurrier's comeback was a new thing

Steve Spurrier has had to crawl
back up, out of a hole, before
South Carolina fans are no-doubt sickened by the 52-28 loss to Texas A&M. But Head Football Coach Steve Spurrier is putting the ugly loss, and the horrific defensive effort, behind him.
And it it was not that long ago, the Gamecocks would have expected to lose. And the yearly schedule featured a list of teams that fans would look over, hoping to find six poor teams that SC could beat and earn a lowly bowl bid.
The year 2005 was Spurrier's first year at USC.
The Gamecocks lost three of its first five games. Alabama and Auburn dominated South Carolina. Fans celebrated a moral victory with a two-point loss at Georgia.
While Gamecock supporters were resigned to the “Here-we-go-again” syndrome, Spurrier's team defeated Kentucky and Vandy at home. And an improbable win at No. 25 Tennessee got tongues to waggin' as the Gamecocks won at Arkansas and beat Florida at home.
Sure the struggles of the early season had fans down. But that nadir led to one of a most satisfying seasons for Gamecock fans.
Spurrier's comeback, after all seemed lost, show that he does not quit, just because he is counted out.
And Spurrier's track record is the reason Gamecock fans should shake off the loss to A&M. Was it an aberration? Who knows. Spurrier is saying time will tell if it was his team being terrible, or if the Aggies are that good.
But there is a lot of football left. And Carolina fans have a lot to look forward to, if history, under Spurrier, is an indicator.
