Expecting the Gamecocks to roll is not a bold prediction.
Dylan Thompson looks comfortable in the Spurrier offense. Expect scores. |
It's really not a good idea to get into
predicting game scores. There are people who consider it a source of
manhood or intelligence to get a score right. But the intelligent
should know how making predictions on college football scores can
bite you. Predicitng a winner is one thing, but getting the spread
right, is a totally different animal. That probably goes double for
Steve Spurrier's teams at South Carolina.
Many, many times what seems logical
with the Gamecocks does not happen.
If you remember the last time South
Carolina went to Vanderbilt. It was 2012, and quarterback Dylan
Thompson got into the game after Conner Shaw seemingly got speared in
the shoulder and had to leave.
Thompson played the first two series of
the third quarter and the offense went three-and-out both drives.
Thompson was sacked twice and did not throw a completion in three
attempts.
SC slipped by, 24-17. Fans were
grateful for the W.
But forget all about that. First of all
James Franklin is gone. Based on the theory that coaching is the most
important aspect of the game (it is) not facing the fiery Franklin
makes the 'Dores less of a threat. He is a GOOD coach. Vandy may come along with the new staff, but it will probably take some time.
Aside from Franklin's departure, Thompson looks more
comfortable every time he takes the field for the Gamecocks.
Thompson has always been a
find-the-open-guy - and pass- QB. And that has to make Spurrier warm around the
heart.
Spurrier likes offense. He HATES to give
the ball up. Spurrier has said that. That's why he goes for it on
fourth down so much.
Spurrier is also at his best when he
demoralizes opponents with seemingly easy scores. Versus Georgia last
Saturday, Thomson and his receivers made it look like a scrimmage at
times.
And Vandy just does not have the
personnel on D Georgia has.
Spurrier is just beginning to realize
the machine he has on offense. On a team that has set records for
wins for the school by playing defense, offense won the Georgia game.
With his new toy, a machine gun of
touchdowns, expect Spurrier to light up the scoreboard in Nashville.
Will the Gamecocks cover the
20-point-plus spread, who knows. But if I had to bet, I'd say
conditions look ripe for a scoring blitz. And and the improving
Gamecocks' defense may finally be facing an offense they can handle.
The odds look good for the Garnet and
Black.
