Not sure if anything can save Lorenzo Ward's job as USC defensive coordinator. |
South Carolina's defense CHOKED in a
gargantuan way, squandering a 13-point lead midway through the fouth
quarter. The Gamecocks lost about all hope for many of its goals,
being beaten by Missouri 21-20. The loss was the result a total
breakdown on defense, aided by horrible kick coverage.
A defense that had played over its
head all night, was out-coached in the last eight minutes and
snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
Lay it ALL on the shoulders of
Defensive Coordinator Lorenzo Ward, and the assistants he has hired.
Ward has slipped by for three years on players brought in by former
de-facto USC DC Ellis Johnson.
The job is too big for Ward. He must
now begin updating his resume. South Carolina lived by hope too much
already this year. It finally caught up with Ward.
The Gamecocks opened double-digit leads
on Georgia and almost blew it. The Gamecocks could not put East
Carolina away, because of a shoddy D. And even Vandy made scoring
look easy at times versus the Gamecocks.
Head Coach Steve Spurrier has worked
wonders at USC. But two home losses, thanks to a very poor D, shows
Spurrier's DC is not on the level Spurrier has brought the Gamecocks
program.
It's time to make a change, at least as
soon as possible, and move forward.
