Will the Gamecocks look like a Spurrier team of late? |
On Tuesday USC head Football coach
Steve Spurrier spoke to the media.
You can discern a lot from his personal
communication and based on how he answered questions.
On Defense
Spurrier said the practices had not been
conducted well for the D before the Texas A&M game. He seemed to say there has been a lot of
standing around when the D practiced. Spurrier indicated he is getting more involved in the job of coaching the defense. May be mading it more of his responsibility.
He there would be more competition and
that the first-team players would scrimmage versus the first-team
offense more. Had the defensive coaching staff been running the No. 1s versus the No. 2 offense? If so, that may explain one of the
problems of not being ready for an SEC offense like A&M's.
Spurrier said there would not be a lot
time for the defense to be standing around watching each other. Had
they been practicing like that? Why?
Motivation seems to be a problem too.
Spurrier said the team was “lackadaisical.” He said the there
needed to some “fire” and players needed to “act like we like
playing.”
All fans knew, from watching the game,
that there was little pass rush and little pass protection. Spurrier
alluded to the protection issues. Playing ten yards off the receives
may have been what he was referring to. The whole stadium could see
that was a problem, down after down vs A&M.
Also: Spurrier was down. It's he
believed he was to the level that he would not have to deal with the
type of debacle of the A&M game. He said he was embarrassed, as
we are all for him.
He said he has to stay positive, but
that is likely not easy after last Thursday.
Of all games, that ridiculous
performance seemed to take a lot out of the “Head Ball Coach.”
It may take a while to get his spirit
back.
