Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Job Fair, Aug. 7

JOB FAIR AND OPEN HOUSE

In two weeks, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department will conduct a Job Fair and Open House between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 7 in the Squad Room at the agency’s headquarters, 521 Gibson Road, Lexington, in order to give citizens an opportunity to learn about the benefits of working as a corrections officer at the Lexington County Detention Center.

Lexington County Sheriff A. Lewis McCarty said the Sheriff’s Department is seeking competent persons, who have a passion for serving other people, to work as corrections officers. Corrections officers receive professional training and career development at the Detention Center.

“Working as a corrections officer can be a challenging but rewarding career,” McCarty said. “Officers have a chance to make a difference in inmates’ lives by helping inmates change personal behaviors that led to their involvement in criminal activity.”

Competent and committed applicants should expect to spend between one hour and two hours at the Job Fair and Open House, where they will have an opportunity to speak with employees with the Sheriff’s Department Human Resources Division and Detention Center, McCarty said. Applicants will be able to go on a tour at the Detention Center. Applicants also will be able to turn in completed job applications and 

obtain answers to their pre-employment questions from knowledgeable Sheriff’s Department employees.

Qualified candidates must be 21 or older and have a high school diploma or have successfully completed the General Education Development (GED) examination, McCarty said. Qualified candidates also must meet other minimum requirements for all positions at the Sheriff’s Department.

The position of corrections officer at the Detention Center has a minimum starting salary of $34,642 annually, McCarty said. The starting salary can be adjusted based on a qualified candidate’s experience in an applicable field, current certification in South Carolina as a corrections officer and level of higher education from an accredited institution.

Qualified applicants who submit a completed job application at the Job Fair and Open House and meet with a Human Resources Division employee can expect to be immediately scheduled for the first pre-employment testing session, which will expedite their progress through the pre-employment process, McCarty said.

A Sheriff’s Department video that depicts a day in the life of a corrections officer at the Detention Center can be viewed on the agency’s You Tube channel, McCarty said. The video features Sgt. Tony Ward, who is a Pelion High School graduate and U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
