Was an illegal termination of South Congaree police Chief Josh Shumpert retracted?
Shumpert's attorney Jake Moore, said (on July 14) South Congaree Town Council voted to fire Shumpert.
Moore said a vote was taken in a closed session to fire Shumpert. He said the chief's gun and his badge were taken from him.
But Moore said once council was informed that Shumpert's employment could not be terminated in executive session, Shumpert was given back his job as chief.
As word spread in the town of about 2,400, that Shumpert had been let go, a crowd of about 100 supporters showed up for a Monday morning council meeting.
Shumpert is the replacement for former South Congaree police Chief Jason Amodio. Amodio was fired a year ago after South Congaree Town Hall was raided by the FBI and SLED.
Amodio was indicted in June for holding video poker machines in relation to an instigation that ensnared former Lexington County Sheriff James Metts and former Lexington Town Councilman Danny Frazier.
