Could Sheheen's bi-support for gay marriage hurt him in November election?

Sheheen speaks to supporters in Edmund
(Lexington County.) What percentage of
SC Democrats want to redefine marriage laws?
State Sen. Vincent Sheheen, the Democrat candidate for governor, says South Carolina “should pause” its defense of the state’s gay marriage ban.
He -in effect- said we should allow gay marriage until the U.S. Supreme Court decides the issue.
A federal district court ruled Monday in favor of gay marriage, making the sticky political issue a topic that Sheheen likely does not want to deal with. But the media has hounded him, because it is one of the media's banner causes. To redefine marriage, based on sexual preference would be a major victory for an Obama-ruled nation.
The quandary is created as Sheheen says he personally does not support gay marriage.
Sheheen voted in favor of the gay marriage ban in the state Senate in 2005 and 2007. He believes marriage is between one man and one woman. President Barack Obama said the same before being elected the first time. He has since abandoned that definition of marriage to cheers of the national Democrat Party. But South Carolina may not be that liberal.
“I have made my personal position regarding marriage clear,” Sheheen said.
Statewide gay marriage advocates say they will support Sheheen regardless. But when you have so many special interests, that hold together the Democrat party, it's difficult to believe he can please all of them, and motivate a lively following.
Most South Carolinians, including Democrat-voting African Americans, are solidly against gay marriage.
So many conflicts in the party of litmus tests could spell trouble for Sheheen in the November election.
