Columbia's Appleseed Legal Justice Center (ALJC) is an example of a well-connected, power-based bastion of lobbyists that uses failed rhetoric and practices. It's been around for 35 years.
On Monday, an ALJC representative, unidentified, told a Columbia TV reporter that anyone asking that the law be followed in the crisis of a flood of illegal aliens, is guilty of a “rhetoric of hate.”
ALJC bills itself as an advocate for low-income South Carolinians in housing, education, hunger, public benefits, domestic violence, immigration, health care and consumer issues.
Effecting systemic change through the courthouse, legislature, administrative agencies, community and the media is ALJC's goal.
The ALJC has no doubt been given millions in donations. And the government (taxpayer) has increased spending on these same issues exponentially. But things just get worse.
The media is favorable to the ALJC and its clichéd answers to social problems.

The officials at ALJC include many high-powered attorneys from Big Law (corporate law firms.) There are also some CEOs from big companies. Multi-billion-dollar conglomerate Amazon gives money to the ALJC.
Well-known charities supply ALJC with grants, and the ALJC works to make sure as much money is spent to broaden the base of social financial help programs.
How can these powerful, hardworking people contribute so much, yet be so dissatisfied with their fellow citizens? Why have they not made more progress, despite the receiving of so many resources?
It may be time for the ALJC to try a different approach, because the way it operates now, is not working.
